Intestinal Growth and in Vitro Transport of Glucose in the Rapidly Growing Rat

چکیده

We examined the in vitro transport and utilization of glucose by the intestinal epithelium in rats during the period of rapid growth between 8 and 12 weeks of age. The dry weight per centimeter in length of jejunum increased in direct proportion to body weight during this interval. The absorption of glucose at the mucosal surface (per unit length of gut) did not change with growth. In contrast, the serosal secretion of glucose decreased indicating the utilization of glucose was elevated. It was further shown that the increase in glucose usage was highly correlated with the increase in intestinal dry weight that occurred during the four week interval. The data indicate the increase in intestinal tissue with growth did not result in a corresponding increase in the capacity of the intestinal epithelium to absorb glucose. We attributed the discrepancy in the transport of glucose at the mucosal and serosal surfaces to increased diversion of absorbed glucose for metabolism by intestinal tissue. OHIO J. An Investigation into the Role of P-Glycoprotein in the Intestinal Absorption of Repaglinide: Assessed by Everted Gut Sac and Caco-2 Cell Line

The present study aimed at exploring the potential of the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) transporters as a barrier to the repaglinide (REG) epithelial permeability. In-vitro intestinal absorption models, the everted gut sac, and Caco-2 cell line, were used to study the possible role of P-gp in intestinal transport of REG. In the everted gut sacs, apparent permeability coefficients showed cargo concentra...

Effects of Erythroxylum macrocarpum (Erythroxylaceae), an endemic medicinal plant of Mauritius, on the transport of monosaccharide, amino acid and fluid across rat everted intestinal sacs in vitro

The use of herbal medicine is widespread and growing. Erythroxylum macrocarpum (Erythroxylaceae) (EM) is an endemic medicinal plant of Mauritius. Here, the effects of crude aqueous extract of EM leaves on D-glucose, Ltyrosine and fluid absorption, gut wall content and transport across rat everted intestinal sacs were investigated in vitro. Rat everted intestinal sacs were incubated with increas...

Rat C6 glioma cell growth is related to glucose transport and metabolism.

In order to establish whether growth of glioma cells is associated with glucose transport and metabolism, we investigated expression of the glucose transporter and hexokinase, as well as glucose transport and glucose phosphorylation in rat C6 glioma cells growing at different rates. Rat C6 glioma cells were subcloned to produce four different cell lines (CL1, CL2, CL3 and CL4) differing in grow...
